Balsimhills Tree: The Story
Balsimhills Tree is a city farm that promotes rural living. Located in the heart of Baltimore, Balsimhills is a 2-acre plot of land that features a fruit orchard, vegetable garden, herb garden and beekeeping facility. The farm is open to the public from May through November, and it features various events and workshops throughout the year.
The idea for Balsimhills Tree originated when local resident Barbara Hecht was looking for ways to promote rural living in her hometown. She saw a need for more community gardens in Baltimore, and she decided to create a city farm that could serve as a model for others.
The farm provides food education programs for schoolchildren, offers weekend horticulture workshops for adults, and operates as an incubator for new urban agriculture initiatives. In addition to its own produce, Balsimhills Tree sells produce from local farmers at its Farmers’ Market every Saturday from April through December.
Balsimhills Tree is a vital resource not only for Baltimore residents but also for those who live nearby. It helps promote healthy living habits by providing access to fresh vegetables and fruit throughout the year, and it helps connect people with local producers who can teach them about sustainable farming practices.

The Benefits of City Farm Living
Urban farm living has many benefits, one of which is learning about and connecting with our local food system. At Balsimhills Tree, we aim to promote ruralliving by growing produce close to where it’s consumed.
CityFarmers.org states that urban farming can conserve water, reduce pollution and help build community. We at Balsimhills Tree have found that urban farming also encourages creativity and innovation. For example, we grew cucumbers in a shipping container to see if it would be a viable option for us to continue producing vegetables this way during the off-season. Turns out, it was! And now we’re expanding our cucumber production into other small containers so that we can ensure a continuous supply of cucumbers year-round.
When you live on a city farm like ours, you get firsthand experience with how agriculture can impact your community – for the better!
